Private Dwelling in Farringdon

In the picturesque chalk downland of the South Downs National Park this new family home sits comfortably, replacing the original dilapidated bungalow.

The new house is conceived as a collection of interconnecting volumes, of differing heights and materials, breaking down the overall mass of the building, providing interest and relief to its elevations and allowing its occupants to experience differing spatial qualities throughout the house.

The simple material palette of Fittleworth stone, handmade clay tiles and green oak reflect materials used locally, grounding the house in its surroundings. Large swathes of glass - contrasting with the weight of the stone surrounding them - sit behind oak posts that seem to hover above the ground. Modern detailing and construction methods allow the house to present itself as belonging to the 21st century, confirmed by the light, open plan layout and double height spaces of the interior.
