farmhouse - basingstoke
Situated in the North Hampshire countryside, this Grade II listed farmhouse lacked a cohesive, useable layout and most of its agricultural, utilitarian past had been concealed behind decades of incremental layout changes and poor quality 20th century materials.
The layers of the previous alterations were peeled back to reveal not only the more rational original layout, but much of the house’s bones - exposing beautifully aged brickwork, timber framing and floor coverings which add warmth and character alongside the consciously modern interventions.
The addition of 2 distinct extensions, one at each end of the house, shifts the focus of the living spaces towards the garden and creates a new flow from the lower light levels of the existing, through the bright spaces of the new to the garden beyond.
The use of flint as a dominant material grounds the additions in their location and compliments the existing house, whilst its pairing with the sharp, clean lines of the glazing, steel frame and careful detailing contrasts purposefully with the warm brick and soft lime render of the original.
